Sometimes you think that the title says it all, that it basically contains everything you need to know about the slot game you are about to play. You may be right on some occasions, but it so happens that this time you would be wrong.
Gladiators is an Endorphina game inspired by the legendary warriors of the arena in ancient Rome, which is something that anyone could have easily guessed by now. You probably also assume that these warriors are human. But the thing is, this time they are fish. Obviously!
Yes, fish gladiators are definitely a thing, and it would be foolish to underestimate their abilities as warriors of the sea. Logically, then, Gladiators takes place in an underwater arena, complete with stone bleachers, but currently empty of spectators. The entire background is shaded in light blue, as are the command buttons. The theme is quite uniform and perhaps not as detailed as in other Endorphina creations such as Blast Boom Bang.
The music is as heroic as you would expect from a gladiator-inspired production, giving the game a fun and epic feel, which is rather comical since the main characters are actually fish.
And if you were thinking of massive creatures like whale sharks and the like, think again. These are bite-sized fish, some of which you probably wish you had on your plate at some point in your life. It is now clear that Gladiators is going to be a very fun game to play.
First things first, let’s review how to get started in Gladiator. Before you step into the sandy underwater arena, there are a few useful steps you can take to get ready to face our fish warriors.
Take a look at the top left corner of the game screen. There you will find a coin icon that allows you to change the coin value of the game to suit your preferred playing style. You can choose a value from 0.01 up to 5 per coin. It all depends on how many coins you are willing to bet on your next spin, which of course you can determine yourself thanks to the up and down arrows located below the five seafood-covered reels of Gladiators. There are also 21 possible paylines drawn across these reels, any number of which can be activated by clicking on the Lines display in the bottom right-hand corner. The total value of your next bet will appear in the Total Bet section.
That’s it, press the Spin button to start the reels spinning and collect your first winnings. You can also choose to risk them again by clicking on the Take Risk button when it appears: you will be given the chance to double your stash by playing a quick guessing card game against the computer. Be careful, though, as one wrong guess will make all your newly earned coins disappear.
After the usual card-inspired symbols from 10 to Ace, the payout table of Gladiators gets very interesting. There are five different gladiators competing in the arena, all fish and all equally determined to defeat their opponents.
They all come in full armor, including helmets, and wield powerful weapons such as fish hooks and nets, as well as tridents and axes. They all come with different colored backgrounds (yellow and blue, red and green) and the mightiest of them all even rides a seahorse-drawn carriage. If you are not in awe now, you never will be.
The last two symbols deserve their own section. The Laurel Wreath, despite its remarkable ability to survive underwater, has another useful property: it acts as a wild card in Gladiators, substituting for any other symbol to complete a winning combination – except for the last symbol.
Our final actor is a shark in chains, no doubt the aquatic equivalent of the lions to which prisoners were fed in Rome. It is the Scatter symbol here and awards a number of Free Spins depending on how many Sharks appear on screen (up to 50 Free Spins!). The winning gladiator team is determined after each Free Spin, with potential cash rewards at stake. All wins are doubled by default in free play mode.
Gladiators has a lot going for it: a very original take on a rather classic theme, a genuinely fun atmosphere and plenty of opportunities to win big – especially during Free Spins.
The overall simplistic and cartoonish design makes it sometimes difficult to distinguish between the different types of gladiators, but otherwise this is certainly a slot game worth a try for all players.
